DAY 1
● Arrival at Sakudaira Station on the Hokuriku Shinkansen
● Bus to Takamine Kogen Lamp Inn
● Short hike to Mt. Takamine (1 hr, 3.0 km) or relax at hotel in the beautiful outdoor onsen
● Dinner at accommodation

● Accommodation: Takamine Onsen Lamp Inn


DAY 2 Hiking in Takamine Kogen 9.5 km
● Breakfast at Takamine Onsen Lamp Inn
● Summit Mt. Kurofu (1.5 hrs 2.5 km) with beautiful views of Mt. Asama on clear days
● Hike to Jakotsudake (1 hr, 2 km)
● Hike to Asama Sansou (2 hrs, 5 km) for pickup
● Return to Takamine Onsen Lamp Inn for dinner


DAY 3 – Takamine Kogen - Yunomaru 7 km
● Breakfast at Takamine Onsen Lamp Inn
● Morning hike to Mt. Mizunoto (1 hr, 2.0 km)
● Descend to Yunomaru Onsen (2 hrs, 5.0 km)
● Drive to Matsumoto (2 hrs)
● Dinner at local Izakaya style restaurant
● Accommodation: TBD Western Style Hotel
 

Day 4 – Hakamakoshiyama - Ougatou 8.4 km
● Buffet breakfast at hotel in Matsumoto
● Drive to Hakamakoshiyama Trailhead (~0:40 hrs)
● Hakamakoshiyama Trailhead to Utsukushigahara Nature Center (3:00 hrs, 7.4 km)

● Lunch
● Utsukushigahara Nature Center to Ougatou Hotel (0:25 hrs, 1.0 km)
● Relax in the hot spring onsen
● Dinner in Ougatou Hotel
● Lecture on local wildflower species
● Accommodation: Ougatou Hotel
 

Day 5 – Ougatou - Mt. Chausu - Wada Toge 12.5 km
● Breakfast at Ougatou Hotel
● Ougatou Hotel to Mt. Chausu (0:50 hrs, 2.0 km)

● Mt. Chausu to Wada Toge (4:00 hrs, 10.5 km)
● Return to Ougatou Hotel by vehicle (0:30 hrs)

● Dinner at accommodation
● Accommodation: Ougatou Hotel

 

Day 6 – Wada Toge - Shirakabako 11.0 km
● Optional sunrise hike from Ougahana to Ougatou Hotel (0:25 hrs, 1.0 km)

● Breakfast at Ougatou Hotel
● Drive to Wada Toge (0:30 hrs)
● Wada Toge - Yajima Shitsugen Visitor Center (2:00 hrs, 4.0 km)
● Lunch at Yajima Shitsugen Visitor Center
● Yajima Shitsugen Visitor Center to Lake Shirakabako (3:15 hrs, 6.0 km)

Day 7 - Shirakabako - Honzawa Onsen 9.5 km
● Breakfast at Hotel
● Send luggage ahead to Kobuchizawa
● Drive to Mugikusa Toge (0:40 hrs)
● Mugikusa Toge to Nakayama (2:20, 4.0 km)
● Nakayama to Honzawa Onsen (3:00, 5.5 km)
● Enjoy the outdoor hot spring bath
● Dinner at accommodation
● Accommodation: Honzawa Onsen Mountain Hut
 

Day 8 - Honzawa Onsen - Matsubarako 9.5 km
● Breakfast at Honzawa Onsen Mountain Hut
● Honzawa Onsen Mountain Hut to Matsubarako Station (2:50 hrs, 9.5 km)
● Lunch at Matsubarako Station
● Train to Kobuchizawa Station (1:10 hrs)

● Relax at Hotel
● Dinner in Kobuchizawa

Day 9 - Kobuchizawa - Shinjuku
● Breakfast at Hotel Keyforest Hokuto

● Depart for Shinjuku in Tokyo (2:00 hrs)

PACKING LIST

  • ​Enough clothing for the entire tour (laundry facilities are limited)

  • Toiletries

  • Waterproof jacket or windbreaker

  • Waterproof hiking pants

  • T-shirts (short and long sleeve) + fleece (depending on the season)

  • Water bottle

  • Worn-in waterproof hiking boots. Make sure you have worn them multiple times before the tour

  • Warm socks

  • Day pack/backpack and pack cover

  • ​Gloves (depending on the season)

  • ​Beanie/knit cap and/or ear warmers (depending on the season)

  • Hat

  • Sunscreen

  • Sunglasses

  • Hiking poles

Additional Items

  • Passport – Make sure it is not expired and that you do not need a visa to enter Japan! Bring a photocopy of your passport in case the original is lost or stolen

  • Credit Card – Most businesses in Japan accept major credit cards (there may be an international transaction fee)

  • Cash – For the places that don’t, bring at least $300 ~ $500 per person

  • Debit Card – Along with your PIN number for cash withdrawals. Post offices and 7-11s accept all major debit card companies

  • Important Documents – Bring a copy of your travel and medical insurance policies

  • Camera – Don’t forget th charger or extra batteries

  • Medication – Please inform us beforehand of allergies if there is anything we should know regarding your medications

  • ​Reading material - Sometimes there is no wifi or English TV stations

  • ​Snacks - If there is anything specific you want while hiking or walking

Traveling with Active Travel Japan involves potentially dangerous activities and therefore Active Travel Japan assumes no liability for any loss, theft, damage, personal injury or death resulting from participation in its tours. Active Travel Japan requires all travelers to sign a waiver form prior to participation, in addition to being covered under a medical insurance and travel insurance policy to both minimize the financial and medical associated with high risk activities.
